Family Branding Photography: Stephanie and Ryan Graves of The Conscious Crew

"It takes a village to raise a child." — African proverb

Most branding sessions I photograph center on one person and their work. Stephanie and Ryan Graves asked me to photograph six: themselves and their four kids. That might sound like a family portrait session with a logo in the background. But for The Conscious Crew, the family is the work. Their approach rests on the idea that we don't heal and grow alone, and that the way we tend our own inner world ripples out to our partners, our children, and our communities.

"Rather than teaching from theory alone, we draw from what we've personally lived, learned, and integrated along the way."

Stephanie and Ryan Graves are the husband-and-wife team behind The Conscious Crew, and parents of four. Stephanie is a former Physician Assistant, functional medicine nutritionist, nervous system educator, and certified cacao practitioner. Ryan is a published author and Bwiti initiate. Together they help individuals and families slow down, reconnect, and experience more presence, freedom, and joy.

"What makes our work especially meaningful to us is our focus on the family as a whole. We believe personal growth doesn't happen in isolation—the way we care for ourselves and relate to our own inner world directly influences how we show up for our partners, our children, and our communities."

We began on living room floor with a family circle. Ryan opened with the drum, and it was a sweet moment; quiet, attentive, and lovely. It lasted about forty seconds before the youngest crew member decided it was time for interpretive dance.

I loved photographing a family who practices what they teach. Stillness and the wildness aren't opposites. They live in the same circle.

Where it all began

"The Conscious Crew grew organically from our own lives. Both of us have walked through significant personal challenges and healing journeys, and those experiences fundamentally changed the way we think about health, relationships, family, and what it means to live well." ~Stephanie

Ryan also writes children's books, so of course we had to have a story time.

Barefoot in the woods

For the second half of the session we headed outside to Hominy Creek River Park in Asheville. The Crew wanted images that captured the other side of their work: nature, play, adventure, and simply being together. Shoes were optional. Nobody opted in.

"Over time, we became increasingly passionate about creating a different way of living within our own family: one with more intention, regulation, presence, freedom, adventure, and genuine connection."

Jumping for joy; the Conscious Crew executes a perfect jump, with all 12 feet (60 toes!) off the ground.

"We feel especially called to work with parents and families because we believe that when one person heals and grows, it changes a life—but when families heal and grow together, the impact can reach generations."

Nearly two decades together, and still looking at each other like that!

What's next for The Conscious Crew

Stephanie currently offers group and private mentorship combining nervous system regulation, functional nutrition, lifestyle foundations, and personalized support for parents. Ryan's next book, Sports Shorts, the second in his World of Shorts series, is expected in early 2027.

And they're expanding into immersive Family Connection Retreats, with upcoming experiences planned in the Dominican Republic.

"These retreats will give families an opportunity to step away from everyday distractions and reconnect through nature, creativity, play, meaningful conversation, nourishment, and shared adventure."

After an afternoon at the creek with this crew, I can tell you those retreats are going to be something special.
